Refugee protection

The following sections contain information on the most important international treaties and agreements of which Macao is signatory, as well as national legislation relevant to the protection of refugees.

In the Macao SAR, the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol have been extended and a national asylum law was adopted. Persons of concern have access to public medical assistance, education and police assistance, but in practice, the number of claims is very low.

In 2004, Macao passed the Regime de reconhecimento e perda do estatuto de refugiado which establishes the legal framework regarding the recognition and loss of refugee status, to put into force in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR).
