Cote d’Ivoire acceded to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in 1961 and its 1967 Protocol in 1970. More recently, in 2013, the country also acceded to the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, as well as the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Cote d’Ivoire is also a member of the 1969 Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa, as well as the 2009 African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention). 

The national Government has also taken measures to address the issue of statelessness in Cote d’Ivoire. In 2015, the country hosted the Ministerial Conference on Statelessness in West Africa, where the Abidjan Declaration was adopted. Furthermore, in 2017, all ECOWAS Member States adopted the 2017 Banjul Action Plan on the Eradication of Statelessness. However, the Ivorian asylum system provides minimum standards for the treatment of asylum seekers, governed by two executive decisions in 20017 that created the National Eligibility Commission and Appeals Commission.
